Renowned author and agricultural scientist Dr. KN Ganeshaiah and his three friends Dr. V V Belavadi, Dr. Vinodababu Sannaveerappanavar, and Mrs. Shakuntala are on a unique road-trip from Bangalore to Cambodia along the east coast of India, through Burma, and Thailand. In a 45-day long journey, from Karnataka to Kampuchea, the foursome scholars will be visiting several exotic, interesting, and historical places enjoying the land and its people, and experiencing the diverse life along their travel routes. Suryavarma Yaana 2019 Day One to Day Three Bangalore – Nellore – Vishakhapatnam Sept 15 to Sept 17, 2019 Here’s a glimpse of travel experiences of Suryavarma Yaana 2019 team on the first lap their journey of first 600 Kilometres.
Suryavarma Yaana 2019 Submarine Museum Special Edition The Suryavarma Yaana Team visited the unique museum for Submarine during the stopover at Vishakhapatnam. Here’s a detailed view inside the submarine that was instrumental in India’s victory in Indo-Pak War in 1971.
Day Four to Five Vishakhapatnam to Bhubaneshwar Traveling a distance of 443 Kilometres along the east coast of India, the Suryavarma Yaana Team – Dr. K N Ganeshaiah, Dr. Vasuki Belavadi, Dr. VB Sannaveerappanavar, and Smt. Shakunthala – visited the historical Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves near Bhubaneshwar that date to 2nd Century BC. The team brings you the glimpses of these age-old Jain dwellings and Cave art.
Dhaulagiri Ashoka Edicts Special Edition The Suryavarma Yaana Team visited Dhauli or Dhaulagiri, a hill along the banks of the river Daya near Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. Rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka are found here. The famous Kalinga War was fought here, and where Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism.
Day Six and Seven: Sept 20 – 21, 2019 Bhubaneshwar to Mayurbhanj- 309 Kilometers Day Six and Seven brought royal experiences to the Suryavarma Yaana Team, both the past and the present day royalty in the state of Odisha. Here are a few glimpses of what they saw amongst the old Haripur Palace Ruins of Old Bhanja Rulers, Baripada as well as the team’s wowsome tête-à-tête with the present day Maharajah Praveen Chandra Bhanja Deo, his wife Maharani Rashmi Rajyalakshmee, and younger daughter Princess Akshita Bhanjh Deo, not to mention the Royal dog Sebastian. The team stayed overnight at the Belgadia Palace in Mayurganj, which has now been converted into a boutique homestay, in order to huild sustainable communities as well as preserve the rich heritage and legacy.
Day 8 and Day 9 (Sept 22 – 23, 2019) Kolkata to Malda – 330 Kilometres These two days were a journey through several mosques and mausoleums in the region as Suryavarma Yaana team travelled from Malda to Kolkata. The journey took the team in and out of the borders of Bangladesh too.
Day 10 and Day 11 Siliguri – Bongaigaon – Guwahati (454 Kilometers) These two days the Suryavarma Yaana team savoured the land and people of Assam. The ride from Siliguri along the Chicken Corridor through Bongaigaon and onto Guwahati was another unique experience in the biggest of seven sister states of India. At Guwahati the team visited the Umanand Island on River Brahmaputra.
Day 12, 13 and 14 Guwahati – Shillong – Jowai – Jaintia Hills – Silchar (334 Kilometers) The Suryavarma Yaana Team drove through the abode of clouds, Meghalaya and the jeweled land of India, Manipur. Stopping at the magnificent Umiam lake and the Megalithic Stone regions, the team went on to take a break at Jaintia Hills. The next day they visited the limestone caves and explored the tribal lifestyle along the roadside as they drove towards Silchar. At Silchar, it was the beginning of the nine-day celebrations of Durga Puja, a feast for the eyes and all senses too.
Day 15 and Day 16 Imphal Special Suryavarma Yaana team had a 2-day break at Imphal before they crossed the borders of India into Burma. The team spent the days exploring the local places, food, and the Indo-Japan War memorial to get a taste of the native. One of the highlights of this stay is the visit to Ima Keithel, world’s largest women-only marketplace. The team is also waiting for a group of bikers who will join them for the next laps of the road trip.
Day 17 to Day 19 Imphal Special Suryavarma Yaana team had a 2-day break at Imphal before they crossed the borders of India into Burma. The break was also to wait for a group of four bikers who would be joining them for the next laps of the road trip. The team spent these two days exploring the local places, food, and the Indo-Japan War memorial to get a taste of the native. One of the highlights of this stay is their visit to Ima Keithel, world’s largest women-only marketplace.
Day Twenty to Twenty Three Bagan – Inle Lake – Kyaing Ton – Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai (Thailand) Myanmar-Thailand Edition This episode features the Suryavarma Yaana Team’s crossing from Myanmar to Thailand. from Bagan to Inle Lake, talking to the long-necked Kayan women near Inle Lake was a special wonderment. As the team moved from Myanmar to Thailand via Kyaing Tong and then to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, a visit to the Golden Triangle where the three countries – Laos, Myanmar and Thailand – can be seen at the confluence of River Ruak and River Mekong, added to the wonders of the Yaana. The White Temple at Chiang Rai as well as the hot springs at Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai gave their first taste of Thailand.
Day Twenty Four to Day Thirty Chiang Mai – Doi Inthanon – Pai Thailand Special This episode features Suryavarma Yaana Team’s sojourn into various regions of Thailand. Enjoying Orchid and Butterfly Gardens, Historical Parks, and scinitllating yet peaceful Pagodas, traveling into monolithic caves, the team had their nerve-racking experience when they went on a river-rafting bout. Day Thirty One to Day Thirty Six
Cambodia Special This episode features Suryavarma Yaana Team’s final destination where King Suryavarma II reigned. The salient features of this episode is the visit to the world famous Angkor Wat Temple, the largest temple complex in the world, to the Ta Phrom Temple where the largest sitting Buddha is placed, to the Golden Palace in Mandalay, and to the Kuthadow Pagoda.
Day Thirty Seven to Day Forty Five This episode features Suryavarma Yaana Team’s return journey. Suryavarma Yaana Team having reached their final destination of Cambodia, the home of King Suryavarma Two, started their journey back home. They took a route different from which they had come to Cambodia. They drove through Imphal, Moreh, touching a few places in Bihar, staying at Rewa and Bhedaghat before reaching their homes in Bangalore. The return journey took a total of nine days. Four friends, four countries, 45 days and more than 16,000 kilometers, the Suryavarma Yaana team is now home!
